Homeland Security Jobs for Firefighters

Firefighters and Homeland Security

Firefighters can wear many different hats, from hazardous materials to rescuing kittens in trees. However, since the September 11th attacks, the integrity and steadfastness of firefighters have demonstrated that they are perfect candidates for careers in Homeland Security.

The para-military demeanor of the fire station, along with the strict codes of honor that firefighters pride themselves on are exactly what our new administration will be looking for in the January of 2009. As we are ushered into a new era, Homeland Security positions are expected to grow by an astonishing 2.5% by 2014, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Job Description
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials in the public and private sectors; extensive knowledge of, and ability to interpret and communicate to others, rules, regulations, and guidelines prepared by state and federal agencies related to emergency preparedness programs; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; familiarity with grant requirements and ability to compare and evaluate grant proposals; and knowledge of planning principles and ability to apply planning techniques.

Median Salary
A typical entrance level salary for a homeland security job is $35,000; yet with a specialized degree in counter-terrorism, intelligence, or a technical science, typical starting pay is around $65,000.

Many homeland security jobs require applicants to have earned at least a bachelor’s degree or higher. Since homeland security jobs are currently the most sought after government profession, earning another degree will greatly increase your chances of getting a close consideration to the agency you are applying to.
