Job Description
The Battalion Chief is primarily a management position responsible for planning and managing personnel for a full service fire/EMS/rescue emergency response agency. Battalion Chiefs manage the emergency programs within the Operations Division and report directly to the District Commander or Fire Chief. This position demands strong ethical, professional, and service-oriented leadership and is responsible for the general morale of all under his/her command.

Education Requirements
While education and training requirements vary from state to state, the Battalion Chief position is one of seniority. Most departments require college course work in fire science, some require a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, fire science, fire technology, other fire service related program, or other related field of study.
Job Outlook
Although employment is expected to grow as fast as the average for all jobs, candidates for these positions are expected to face keen competition as these positions are highly attractive and sought after. In 2006, first-line managers held approximately 52,000 jobs, expected to increase to 58,000 by the year 2016. Those who have completed some fire fighter education at a community college and have EMT or paramedic certification will have an additional advantage.
